Workshop: navigating the EU regulatory framework for international AI-driven medical research

Two weeks ago at CPDP2026 in Brussels, KU Leuven’s A. Halid Kayhan Kayhan, together with Eylem Karakaya and Francesco Trovò from Politecnico di Milano, led a workshop on navigating the EU regulatory framework for international AI-driven medical research.
We had an engaged group of 8 participants, and while we couldn’t cover everything planned, the discussion naturally focused on:
🇪🇺 Patient consent, GDPR, and medical research
🇪🇺 When the AI Act and MDR apply to AI-based tools in healthcare
🇪🇺 International data transfers under GDPR
What stood out most was the strong interest in the real-world application of these regulations in medical AI research.
Many thanks to the participants that showed up and to our I3LUNG team for the work 💪🏻🫁💙
